CIT building design students visit

Last Saturday, architect and lecturer in the CIT Building Design course, Shane O’Brien took a group of students on an excursion to The Franklin House. The students were impressed by how cool the house was during the middle of a warm day and how spacious, functional and inviting it felt despite its small footprint. Shane commented that it was great to show the students that sustainable housing doesn’t have to involve new fancy and expensive technologies. The Franklin House clearly shows that going back to the basics — considering orientation, climate and the particular site carefully; designing for efficiency, functionality and connection to outdoors; and using conventional construction materials and methods to a high standard — can be incredibly successful.
